(no subject)

My sixteenth birthday is in about two and a half months. On my world, most people of royal and noble class marry when they're that age, and most of those marriages are arranged at least a year or so before that. As it stands, I'm already falling behind everyone else; no matter how much parents may want their son to marry the Fire Lord, they're not going to wait around forever. Whenever I do go back, I'll be stuck with someone that was unwanted by all the others for some reason-- because his family has a shameful history, or because he's a pervert, or because he's thirty years older than me. The Fire Lord will be given the last pick.

Things aren't supposed to be this backwards.

OOC: Marginally related to this.

I would hardly call it bleak.

You said, and I quote, "The Fire Lord will be given the last pick."

If that isn't a bleak situation for a ruler of a nation, then I'm afraid I don't know what is.

Marriage is hardly the most important thing for a leader. That line says nothing of what my overall standing in society will be.

You said yourself that you needed an heir, therefore marriage must be one of the most important things for you, at least. And if you set so much stock in bloodlines, then I'm sure you'd want to marry into one with a more favourable reputation.

Marriage is a means to an end, nothing more. And from a social standpoint, getting the "last pick" means very little-- it doesn't mean that my people disrespect me, or that I won't be followed loyally.

Of course I want to marry someone whose family has a spotless reputation, but if that isn't possible, a few transgressions in their history is hardly a disaster. Nobility and rank is far more important. My own family, for example, unfortunately has several traitors-- but that doesn't mean anything when it comes to the big picture. We don't allow a few bad apples to spoil the bunch.

So if the issue really doesn't matter to you at all, then why bother to make a post about how backward things are?

[identity profile] peoplesprincess.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It matters. It's just not catastrophic.

You certainly didn't make it sound that way.

You're just reading too far into things.

Apparently so.
